CRIBBAGE ON KABETOGAMA

The 2009 inaugural cribbage tournament at Pine Tree Cove Resort started off with a bang!
The top three winners were a surprise and everyone had a great time.  The camaraderie was second to none.

The June 7th kick-off at the screen pavilion started with a moment of silence for the recently passing of Leverne Oveson.
He will always be missed. Then the competition started.  It was so fierce, that there was four different people who got skunked.
It has been reported that the host, Sam Bernick, purposely allowed himself to be skunked to show Good Will and be gracious.
There were nine players, five were men, four women, and two each were skunked.

The results;  Tie for first place was Mingo and Sherry Vertina and third place went as a surprise to Bob Buntrock.
The other players were Karen Huth, Sam Bernick, Lee Konen, Lynn Osse, Dan Vertina and Jerry Strieff.
Stay tuned for more cribbage coverage.  Next gathering is Sunday, June 14 at 1:00 p.m., again at Pine Tree Cove.

  MCGREGOR AND VERTINA TIE FOR FIRST PLACE HONORS;
           SAM BERNICK IN TEARS

Mingo McGregor and Sheri Vertina tied for first place honors at the first Cribbage Tournament of the season
held at Kabetogama’s Pine Tree Cove Cribbage Casino on Sunday, June 7.  Bob Buntrock captured third place.

The nine players present paused before starting play to remember the late LeVerne Oveson who was a
regular participant in the tournament.  Many stories were shared regarding LeVerne’s Cribbage skills.

Also playing in the season’s initial outing in order of their finish were:  Lee Konen,
Jerry Streiff, Lynn Osse, Karen Huth, Sam Bernick, and Dan Vertina.

Again this year when any player is skunked he or she is required to wear a custom made Skunk hat until the
dubious honor is again earned later.  Four players wore the hat this week – Sam Bernick, Dan Vertina, Karen Huth,
and Lynn Osse.  Please express your condolences when you next meet.

Tournament through the eyes of Sam Bernick

At the start of play, self proclaimed Cribbage Wizard, Sam Bernick, announced that based on his analysis of the
Cribbage playing strengths of past participants he had assigned a Tier Level to each player that might be considered in
seeding future tournaments.  It was no surprise to the players assembled that he assigned himself as the only
Tier One player on Kabetogama.  Bob Buntrock was awarded a 1.5 Tier rating.  Mingo McGregor and
Karen Huth were placed at Tier Two.  All other players were rated Tier Three through Ten.  When asked who
gave him the power to rate other players Sam said with a smile, “It’s my Cribbage Casino, my Cribbage Boards,
and my cards -- does that answer your question?”

Note above that Tier One Bernick placed eighth and wore the Skunk hat  His Tiers have turned to Tears.

6-14-09 CRIBBAGE TOURNAMENT

The only healthy thing going on in last week’s cribbage tournament was the vegetables and fruit that was served.
It even got sort of quiet because Mingo was out for blood!  And he got it!  Mingo took first place again this time!
Instead of moving him up to a “First Tier” player, we are moving him to a 1.5 tier player in joining Buntrock
in this catagory, just behind Sam Bernick, the only first tier player.  We must recognize Sherry Vertina as
second place winner and Bob Buntrock in third.  These folks keep taking placement by surprise.

Mingo is getting to where he may soon deserve “bragging rights,” as he has been in first place two times now.
There will be a chant to “beat Mingo, beat Mingo” at the next tournament.
Sam, with his self proclaimed First Tier, is slowly turning to “Many Tears.

A few people had to wear the skunk hat.  It is rumored that Sam said, he is  "humbled by the surprising talent
of Mingo and the rest of the group."  Mingo is impressing everyone with his “luck,” but time will tell if placements continue.
Joining in on the fun, also, was Lee Konen, Dan Vertina, Dale and Pat Peters, and Jerry Strieff.

The next tournament will be Sunday, June 28 at 1 PM at the Pine Tree Cove screen pavilion.
We welcome anyone who would like a fun time out.  Call Sam at 875.2088

June 28, 2009 Cribbage Tournament

Pine Tree Cove Resort will be hosting the third Cribbage Tournament of 2009 at 1:00pm on Sunday July 12th
at the picnic pavilion. Everyone is Welcome – Come Join the FUN! For more information – call Sam or Joan Bernick
at 875-2088. There are some participants that are still set on de-throning MINGO. Come on down and see for yourself…..

Unbelievable – 2 – “29” Hands in one day. MINGO got the first one – the second hand was Larry Coran with a
different deck of cards at a different table. 4 Skunks!! They are saying who – but someone was in that category twice.

Again - MINGO 1st, Larry Coran 2nd, Dale Peters 3rd. For the Third Tournament in a Row MINGO got 1st Place.
They are not welcoming MINGO back with Open Arms – but I’ll bet that won’t keep him away.

Revision from the last winners – MINGO 1st, Lee 2nd and Sherry 3rd.
We had a little turn around on the 2nd and 3rd place winners.

CRIBBAGE ON  KAB  UPDATE

The games began on Sunday, July 12.   All the players were amazed that Mingo continues to do well as
“Lady Luck’ is still with him .  He placed second tho, not first this time. A big congratulations on first place
goes to Lynn Osse and Sam Bernick has arrived to take third place.  Other players were Jerry Strief, Karen Huth,
Don Lundstrom, Lee Konan, Dean Konan, and last but not least was Bob Buntrock.

Someone afore mentioned, has expressed their opinion of the lack of journalistic professionalism in the previous
articles in this paper.  What this person does not understand, is, the professionalism comes from one’s skill in the game
of cribbage and not from the professional composition of articles.  Being a better cribbage player is more desirable we think.

A good time and good snacks, and lots of laughs was the order of the day.  The next contest will be held on
Sunday July 19 at Pine Tree Cove’s screen pavilion at 1 pm.

PS;  Mr Buntrock and Mr Bernick had a very stressful “grudge-match” in the tourney.
As predicted, Mr Bernick prevailed as winner.

July 19, 2009 CRIBBAGE ON KAB  UPDATE

One never knows what is going to happen at these tournaments!  Three new happenings; a new comer
ties for first place, Mingo did not win first place, and only one skunk in all five games.  Sam Bernick and
Mike McMahon, the newby, tied points for first place.  Karen Huth took third place.  The other players were
Dan and Sherry Vertina, Bob Buntrock and Lee Konan.  The verbal abuse was muted, somewhat this session,
with the predicted winners prevailing.  Numerous insults still filled the air tho.

The next contest will be Sunday, August 9, since the host will be out of town giving cribbage seminars in the cities.
This gives some time for the local players to hone their cribbage skills.

SOME CRIBBAGE HIGHLIGHTS 8-9-09

AWOMAN REIGNS AGAIN

TWO SKUNKS ON ONE PERSON,

DOUBLE SKUNK ON ANOTHER,

IT WAS MATTER OF TIME BEFORE A WOMAN TOOK THE CROWN AGAIN.  THIS TIME IT WAS SHERI VERTINA WHO TOOK FIRST PLACE,
SECONDLY WAS JERRY STRIEFF AND CLOSE BEHIND IN THIRD WAS LEE KONAN.  CONGRADULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU!!
IT WAS A GOOD TIME,  GOOD EATS, HEARTY LAUGHTER AND INSULTS.

THE NEWS IS GETTING AROUND HOW MUCH FUN IT IS TO BE PRESENT AT THESE EVENTS.
WE HAD SOME NEW FACES AND GLAD THEY COULD MAKE IT.   PAUL BURNETT FROM MPLS, FRANK SIMON OF KAB,
DICK CARLSON FROM KAB,  DOUG DEAN FROM W. LAKELAND, MN. AND REGULARS,  KAREN HUTH, MINGO, SAM BERNICK,
BOB BUNTROCK AND DAN VERTINA.  TWO OF THE NEW FOLKS WENT NECK AND NECK TO THE END AND WOULDN'T YOU KNOW,  KNOBS WON THE GAME!

THREE UNUSUAL EVENTS HAVE HAPPENED OVER THE SUMMER HERE.  WE ARE TALKING POINTS;  WE HAD TWO TWENTY-NINE HANDS
IN THE SAME TOURNAMENT, AND THE DOUBLE SKUNKER THIS PAST WEEK, GOT  THE SKUNKEE, WHO HAD ONLY 49 POINTS!! THE FOWL
SMELL GOT TO BE PRETTY STRONG IN THE SCREEN PAVILION.  SOME FOLKS HAD TO STEP OUTSIDE FOR FRESH AIR BETWEEN GAMES.

AUGUST 23, SUNDAY, AT 1:00 WILL BE THE NEXT TOURNEY AT PINE TREE COVE.  COME JOIN IF YOU CAN TAKE THE HEAT!
PLEASE BRING YOUR IDEAS FOR THE FORMER “TIER” LEVEL OF PLACEMENTS.
THE CRIBBAGE CARTEL HAS TOSSED AROUND ASSIGNING DIFFERENT LEVELS, STRADAS, CLASS ID, ETC.   OR, SHOULD HE JUST LEAVE IT ALONE?

AUGUST 23 CRIBBAGE REVIEW

THE PLAYERS THAT SHOWED UP THIS DATE HAVE THE BETTER MEMORY, EVIDENTLY, AS ONLY FOUR SHOWED UP.
TRUE, THE NOTICE WAS NOT IN THE PAPER, BUT WAS ANNOUNCED AT THE AUGUST 9TH GAME.  IT WAS A FRIENDLY,
QUIETIER THAN USUAL, COMPETITIVE AND INTELLECTTUALLY STIMULATING TIME.

MINGO CAME IN FIRST PLACE ONCE AGAIN, AND JERRY STRIEFF WAS CLOSE FOR SECOND.  LEE KONAN AND SAM
BERINCK WERE THE OTHER TWO CHANLLENGERS.  THERE WAS ONLYONE SKUNK THE WHOLE FIVE GAMES.  WE ARE NOT
TELLING WHO THAT POOR OLE’ SOUL WAS, (BUT THE INITIALS ARE S. B.).

THE NEXT GAME WILL BE SUNDAY, AUGUST 30, AT 1:00 P.M. AT PINE TREE COVE’S SCREEN PAVILION.
IF ENOUGH FOLKS WANT TO HAVE A FINAL GAME OF THE SEASON, WE WILL TARGET SEPTEMBER 13.

The next tourney will be September 13, not the 6th as talked about before since that is Labor Day week end.
We will start an hour later to accommodate Mr. Buntrock since he will have a late night the night before.  Come at 2 pm.

SOME CRIBBAGE HIGHLIGHTS FROM AUGUST 30th AND SEPTEMBER 13.

The August 30 tournament was smaller in attendance, but interesting in terms of the winners and the attendees
who were skunked.  The “House,” has a new policy of not naming the skunkees due to sensitivity issues.
The “House,” is making an exception to the skunk policy, in regard to a game played prior to the beginning of the tourney in
which Mr. Bernick did the “deed” to Mr Buntrock.

First place was the afore mentioned, Mr. Bob Buntrock.  Second place was Sam Bernick.  The other players were
Karen Huth, Mingo and Jerry Strieff.  A good time was had by all and everyone absorbed the good-natured insults well.
Even tho the competition was fierce, friendships stayed intact.

The last cribbage gathering with Sam being the host, was September 13.  “Even tho I was up late night before
hosting an event out of town, I came through in the end to be in first place today,” quote from Mr. Buntrock.
Yes, he was champ today, with Jerry Strieff  in second place; other players were Mingo and Dan and Sherry Vertina.
We truly missed Leverne Oveson at every cribbage tournament as he was our ole’ buddy.  Over all, Mingo won first place most often.
May all hone in their skills over winter.  See you in the spring for more fun!  sam
